How to Start Investing in Crypto with Little Money

The starting capital myth

One persistent myth is that you need a whole Bitcoin to participate. False. Bitcoin is divisible to 8 decimals: 0.00000001 BTC is a satoshi. You can start with €10, €50 or €100. What matters isn't the amount but the strategy and consistency.

Starting small is the best school. You will make mistakes — everyone does — and you'd rather make them with €50 than €5,000. That cheap learning is priceless once your capital grows.

Step 1: Pick a regulated exchange

Your first decision is where to buy. In Europe the most reputable exchanges are Kraken, Bitstamp, Coinbase and Bit2Me. All four are registered with European regulators, offer EUR accounts and clear KYC in less than a day.

Avoid obscure platforms with no physical headquarters, no audits and absurd bonuses. If a platform guarantees you 20% APY, it's bankrupt or about to be. FTX and Celsius proved it.

Step 2: How much can you afford to lose?

Before buying, define an amount you could lose 100% without affecting your life. That's your max position. The professional rule says a volatile asset class shouldn't exceed 5–10% of net worth when starting.

If you have €10,000 saved and you're a beginner, don't invest more than €500–1,000 until you understand how you behave emotionally during a 50% drawdown. That psychological test is the best investment you'll ever make.

Step 3: DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging)

DCA means buying the same amount every week or month (e.g. €50 every Monday) regardless of price. It works because it removes the pressure of timing the market — something even professionals fail at — and averages your entry over the full cycle.

Studies on Bitcoin since 2014 show that a weekly €10 DCA outperformed 90% of active traders. Patience is alpha.

Step 4: Self-custody

Once you have a meaningful balance (say €500+), move your crypto off the exchange to your own wallet. A hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger costs €60–120 and protects you from hacks, bankruptcies and exit scams. Your seed phrase lives on paper or metal — never a photo or cloud.

If that's too much complexity for now, a mobile wallet like Muun, BlueWallet or Trust Wallet is fine — always better than leaving it on an exchange.

Capital-killing mistakes

Mistake one: buying shitcoins from social media. 95% of tokens launched in bull markets lose more than 95% of their value in the next bear. Start with Bitcoin and optionally Ethereum. That's all you need year one.

Mistake two: leverage. Leverage liquidates small accounts on normal 5–10% drops. Don't touch it until you've mastered spot and psychology.
